Delhi Faces Scorching Heat: Temperature Hits 43.8°C Amidst Looming Orange Alert and Air Quality Concerns

New Delhi, June 10 (PTI) — Delhi is currently grappling with a scorching heatwave, having recorded its highest temperature this season at a sweltering 43.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. This figure is 3.6 degrees above the seasonal average, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rising temperatures have raised alarms among the denizens of the capital, leading to the issuance of an Orange Alert by the IMD.

The Heat Index: Feeling Hotter Than Ever

The day saw the ‘real feel temperature’ or heat index peak at an alarming 47.1 degrees Celsius, making it feel significantly hotter than the actual temperature due to moisture in the air. The minimum temperature recorded during the same period was a comparatively milder 27.8 degrees Celsius. The humidity levels oscillated between 39 percent to 24 percent throughout the day, contributing to the discomfort experienced by residents.

Continuous Heatwave Conditions

The IMD has indicated that very high temperature conditions will persist in Delhi at least until June 12. On Wednesday, daytime temperatures are anticipated to hover around 45 degrees Celsius, while night temperatures could remain at 29 degrees Celsius. The oppressive heat has prompted citizens to take precautionary measures to avoid heat strokes and other heat-related health issues. The IMD urges everyone to stay hydrated and minimize outdoor activities during peak hours.

Where Heat Meets Air Quality

While temperatures rise, air quality is also becoming a significant concern for residents of Delhi. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 215 at 4 PM on Tuesday, placing it in the ‘poor’ category. The AQI scale classifies air quality as follows:

  • 0-50: Good
  • 51-100: Satisfactory
  • 101-200: Moderate
  • 201-300: Poor
  • 301-400: Very poor
  • 401-500: Severe

This poor air quality adds to the alarming situation as residents deal with high temperatures and potential health complications arising from both heat and air pollution.

Future Relief on the Horizon?

Fortunately for the weary inhabitants of Delhi, some relief could be on the way. The IMD forecasts a possibility of light rain and showers along with gusty winds at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour starting June 12. This could lower temperatures, albeit temporarily, providing much-needed respite from the heatwave.

The Safdarjung observatory, one of the main weather monitoring stations in Delhi, recorded a maximum temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius, while other stations in Lodhi Road, Ridge, and Ayanagar reported temperatures soaring even higher at 45.5 degrees Celsius. The ongoing heatwave serves as a stark reminder of the extreme weather patterns that are becoming increasingly common due to climate change.

As Delhi battles the dual challenges of extreme temperatures and deteriorating air quality, residents are advised to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to protect their health. The government and health organizations are also increasing public awareness campaigns to encourage people to stay safe during this relentless heatwave.

For Delhi’s inhabitants, staying informed and prepared is crucial in thwarting the harsh effects of this season’s burgeoning heat. As the weather evolves, keeping track of updates from the IMD and maintaining vigilance will be vital for ensuring safety during these challenging times.
